Leather. Zustand: Good. None (illustrator). The poetical works of Sir Walter Scott. This volume is half bound in brown leather with gilt lettering on the spine. Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet was a prolific Scottish historical novelist and poet popular throughout Europe during his time. Famous titles include Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, The Lady of the Lake, Waverley, The Heart of Midlothian and The Bride of Lammermoor. Richard Griffin & Co. was a bookselling and publishing company owned by Charles Griffin. It was one of the earliest of the Griffin group of publishers, and still publishing today as James Griffin Limited. They were market-leaders in publishing statistical and mathematical books. In a half calf binding with cloth covered boards. There is some wear to the extremities, including bumping, rubbing, scuffing and fading to the spine. Some of the leather has been scratched away. The binding is tight and firm with both covers and all internal pages securely attached. Internally the pages are clean and bright with the occasional handling mark and some minor spotting that is more prominent on the first and last few pages. There is a pencil signature on the front pastedown. Good. book.

With five engraved plates, a folding facsimile of Scott's handwriting, a frontispiece and an engraved title. Sir Walter Scott was a Scottish historical novelist, playwright, poet and historian. His famous works include 'Waverley', 'Ivanhoe' and 'The Lady of the Lake'. Scott was also a prominent member of the Tory party in Scotland, and served a the long term President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Through his friend James Ballantyne, who founded a printing press in the Scottish Borders, Scott was able to publish his first poetical works, bringing them to the public attention. His works gained much success both in the U.K and across Europe. Many of the German translations of his works we set to music by the composer Franz Shubert. In a full morocco binding. Externally, smart with some light rubbing. Front hinge tender. Tidemarks to endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright with some scattered spots. Blind stamp to title page. Good. book.
