Auch im Bereich der Kunst verdichtete sich die Diskussion über den Wert der Kunst, ihr Studium und den Aspekt, den Kennerschaft dabei zu spielen hatte. Innerhalb dieses Prozesses kam der Reproduktionsgraphik nach Handzeichnungen eine wachsende Bedeutung zu, denn man verstand die auf Papier realisierten Kunstwerke als vielfach erste, unmittelbare Formulierungen der künstlerischen Idee und somit als Ausdruck ihres Genies. Er war aber gleichzeitig ein subtiler, hochversierter Reproduktionsgraphiker.
