Basic blocks are usually thebasic unit to which compiler optimizations are applied. Basic blocksform the vertices or nodes in a control flow graph. The code may besource code, assembly code or some other sequence of instructions. Moreformally, a sequence of instructions forms a basic block if theinstruction in each position dominates, or always executes before, allthose in later positions, and no other instruction executes between twoinstructions in the sequence.
