Hardcover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. by James Helvick, pen name of [Francis] Claud Cockburn. Philadelphia and New York: J.B. Lippincott Company, (1951). First edition, first printing. "First edition" statement to the copyright page. By the British journalist famous for the saying "Believe nothing until it has been officially denied". This suspenseful well-charactered novel with cons, twists, boat travel, and an intricate puzzle plot, was first adapted to a first draft screenplay by John Huston and Cockburn. It was then written, completed, and credited to Truman Capote. Adapted to the 1953 John Houston directed film starring Humphrey Bogart, Robert Morley, Jennifer Jones, and Gina Lolobrigida. Quite an elusive, and important mystery, and film item. The dust jacket flap's book description has been neatly clipped and attached to the front end-paper's verso, covers rubbed, some rub-wear to the upper and lower spine edges, lower shelf-edge, front spine fold, and corner tips, attached paper remnants to the rear end-sheet, purple mark-out of a Parish library stamp to the lower title page end, else only good, firm and sound in sturdy blue linen with black titles and decorative rules to the front cover, and to the spine; lacking a dust jacket.…

A Very Good copy with foxing to edges and endpapers, slightly musty, a few tiny stains to top edge, in a Very Good+ unclipped dust jacket, a little short for the book (as appears to be typical), foxed, a little edge-worn and scuffed. First Edition. First edition. A REVIEW COPY with slip laid in. Helvick was the pseudonym of Claud Cockburn, a noted British radical journalist. Born in Peking, China, in 1904, he was the scion of an aristocratic family--one of his ancestors was the British commander who ordered the burning of the White House during the War of 1812 and his cousin was the novelist Evelyn Waugh. The book was made into a 1953 film directed by John Huston, with the screenplay by Huston and Truman Capote, and starring Humphrey Bogart, Jennifer Jones and Gina Lollobrigida. Huston intended it to be a tongue-in-cheek spoof of "The Maltese Falcon" (1941), also directed by Huston, and other films of Film Noir-style that Huston himself had pioneered (Wikipedia). Near fine with light rubbing to the cover, light bump to top front cover, and faint offset to the endpapers. In a dust jacket which is about an eighth-inch short. We've informed that at least one other copy with a little shorter jacket has been cataloged, so perhaps publisher produced (Graham Gateson reported cataloged by Bauman Books) Also minor edge rubbing and soiling, and a few shallow chips to the spine ends and corners. Cover art still clear and bright.…
