Jahrhundert von dem Joseph Lancaster (1778 - 1838) in die Tat umgesettz wurde. Grundgedanke des Konzeptes war die Unterrichtung junger durch erfahrene ält…ere Schüler, die somit die Funktion von Hilfslehrer ausübten. Ein weiteres Merkmal der Lancaster-Pädagogik war strenge Disziplin: So verzichtete Lancaster zwar aus religiösen Gründen auf Körperstrafen, die Schüler mußten allerdings während des Unterrichts regelmäßig an der Wand stehen, unbotmäßige Schüler wurden bisweilen in Käfige gesperrt. Das Lancaster-System fand im frühen 19. Jahrhundert in einigen europäischen Ländern eine gewisse Verbreitung, insbesondere das Verbot des Systems, das Papst Leo XII 1824 für katholische Schulen aussprach, leitete denNoedergang der Lancasterschulen ein.
