Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. 1st Edition. In simple, darkly faceted stories, Philander Deming writes as a person whose childhood knowledge of the Adirondacks has been honed to a fine sense for its potential human tragedy. In this, the first collection of his best work, a haunting vision of the Adirondacks comes through that is hard to forget. Deming's themes revolve around deception and self-deception, loneliness, and good intentions gone awry. Most of his stories occur just before or after the Civil War. In almost every story, however, Deming shows his characters looking back towards the mountains, from the Mohawk or St. Lawrence Valley or from lonely settlements on the edge of the forest, or across Lake Champlain. Few Adirondack writers have been so convincing in conveying the keen isolation of life in the northern forest and its peculiar effects on the human mind. The wilderness community is cruel, fostered by ignorance and isolation. In the end, the mountains, seemingly a neutral backdrop against which individuals confront a collective morality, are the real source of his inspiration. Stated First Edition. First printing with full number line. Brand new hardcover in a new, mylar covered, dust jacket. The photos on the listing page are of the actual book for sale. Always carefully packaged and shipped quickly.

Soft cover. Zustand: Good. This is an illustrated catalogue ("H") of power pumps distributed by Henion & Hubbell circa 1915. The grey wrappers are printed with a very pale pink design of the company's logo. It has 190 bright, glossy pages covered in black & white illustrations. It measures 7 x 9.25 inches in size. Perfect binding. This copy was owned by an M. L. Enger. His name is stamped onto the first page, and he is also addressed in a letter that was kept in the catalogue's pages. The letter is on Henion & Hubbell stationary and dated January 20th, 1915. The front wrapper is completely removed and there is also cracking along the hinge which detracts from the catalogue's otherwise good condition. The wrapper on the spine also appears cracked and there is 1/2 an inch at the top of the spine missing wrapper where it separated from the glue. Excepting the cracked hinge, the binding is otherwise strong with no loose or missing pages. The pages are glossy and clear of any marks, and filled with very nice illustrations. "Fig. 636 Wood Sucker Rods are made of the best white ash, octagon in shape, and are lighter than solid steels or pipe rods. Prices include rods with couplings attached, and are for standard lengths of from 18 to 20 feet each. Shorter lengths furnished at proportionate increase in price. When wanted, rods are furnished with galvanized couplings and copper rivets at extra price." This catalog comes from a collection of several thousand trade manuals.
