About the book >.>.> In Caesar in Abyssinia, G L Steer offers a detailed examination of the Ttalo-Ethiopian War, presenting a narrative that contrasts the Italian military's achievements with the capabilities of the Ethiopian forces. The title suggests a focus on the prominent figure of Julius Caesar and evokes imagery of grand battles, but Steer clarifies that his account diverges from traditional portrayals of heroism in warfare. Instead, he aims to shed light on the actual circumstances faced by Ethiopian armies as they confronted a formidable European power.Steer critically assesses the military dynamics of the conflict, noting the significant imbalance in weaponry and resources between the Italian forces and their Ethiopian counterparts. He acknowledges the effective strategy employed by Italy, which secured their objective of Addis Ababa within seven months. However, he also emphasises the excessive force used and stresses that this conflict does not accurately reflect the capabilities or organisation of the Italian Army against a more equally matched enemy. Through meticulous analysis, the book seeks to reveal the strength and resilience of Ethiopian troops, despite their lack of artillery, air support, and modern arms. The reading experience combines military analysis with an exploration of underrepresented perspectives in historical narratives. Steer's work invites readers to reconsider conventional ideas regarding warfare and the strength of nations, offering insights into Ethiopian military spirit in the face of overwhelming odds. Ultimately, Caesar in Abyssinia serves as a platform for a deeper understanding of this significant conflict, moving beyond merely recounting events to reflect on the broader implications of military engagement and national pride.…
