Il a été imprimé de ce volume 500 ex. sur Hollande, 10 ex. sur Chine, 10 ex. sur papier de couleur et 2 ex. sur parchemin choisi. Ce volume est le premier ouvrage littéraire d'Octave Uzanne, achevé d'imprimer à Dole (Jura) le 10 février 1878. Curieusement la préface est datée du 15 février 1878. Il contient, outre une préface au lecteur : Une vente de livres à l'Hôtel Drouot, La Gent Bouquinière, Les Galanteries du Sieur Scarron, Le Quémandeur de Livres, Le Vieux Bouquin, Le Libraire du Palais, Un ex-libris mal placé, Les Quais en août, Les Catalogueurs, Simple Coup-d'oeil sur le roman moderne, Le Bibliophile au Champs, Les Projets d'Honoré de Balzac,Variations sur la Reliure de fantaisie, Restif de la Bretonne et ses Bibliographes, Le Cabinet d'un Eroto-Bibliomane, Rondeau. Octave Uzanne avait fait paraître précédemment quelques volumes d'études littéraires : Les Poésies de Benserade, La Guirlande de Julie, Les Poésies de Sarasin, Du Mariage par un philosophe du XVIIIe siècle, chaque fois avec d'érudites et piquantes présentations. Quelques textes des Caprices avaient déjà parus dans la revue Le Conseiller du Bibliophile entre 1876 et 1877. signed by author.
