Overall size of this Full Pageprint is approx 25cm x 17cm with large margins, perfect for mounting framing.Francis Grose (1731and#8211;1791) was anEnglishantiquary, draughtsman, andlexicographer. He was born at his father's house in Broad Street,St-Peter-le-Poer, London. His parents wereSwissimmigrant and jeweller Francis Jacob Grose (d. 1769), and his wife, Anne (d. 1773), daughter of Thomas Bennett ofGreenfordinMiddlesex. Grose was baptised on 11 June 1731 in the parish of St Peter-le-Poer. After attending Shipleyand#8217;s drawing school he was elected a member of the Incorporated Society of Artists in 1766, and became a member of the Society of Antiquaries in 1757. He followed a military career, until in 1769 he inherited his fatherand#8217;s considerable fortune. He must have run through it at a considerable pace, as by 1778 he had returned to the army as Captain and Adjutant of the Surrey Militia. That year he was court-martialled, probably for some and#8220;boyish prankand#8221; His military duties seemed to lessen from the early 1780s onwards, allowing him more time for his antiquarian and other studies. He had already issued the first part of hisAntiquities of England and Walesin 1773, and this was completed in 1787. Most of the drawings were his own. In 1788 he began work onThe Antiquities of Scotlandand stayed for over two months at Friarand#8217;s Carse, the home of Sir Robert Riddell. Robert Burns was living at the neighbouring property of Ellisland at the time, and was already on good terms with Sir Robert, and during Groseand#8217;s visit the two became and#8220;intimate acquaintancesand#8221; according to Burns. Burnsand#8217; and#8220;On Captain Groseand#8217;s peregrinations through Scotlandand#8221; tells of Grose, and by inference their delight in each otherand#8217;s companyAll our prints are 100% guaranteedoriginal antique as dated.
