Édition originale de ce catalogue des tableaux de Louis XV. Le premier volume est consacré aux écoles florentine (9 peintres dont Da Vinci et Michel-Ange, pour 23 tableaux) et romaine (15 peintres dont Raphael et Mantegne, 67 tableaux) ; le second aux écoles vénitienne (16 peintres dont Titien et le Tintoret, 98 tableaux) et de Lombardie (13 peintres ou familles dont le Caravage et Manfrède, 121 tableaux). L'ouvrage est illustré de deux vignettes gravées d'après C. N. Cochin (bandeau au tome 1er, titre au tome second). Commandé par Tournehem, ce catalogue raisonné devait couvrir le reste de la collection royale ; toutefois, Lépicié mourut avant de pouvoir l'achever. Lépicié donne une biographie de chaque peintre?allant de la notice de plusieurs pages à un laconique « il n'y a rien sur la vie de ce peintre »?puis une description de chaque tableau comprenant titre, technique, dimensions, et parfois un commentaire sur la provenance, l'état, une attribution qu'il juge erronée ou la qualité du tableau. De « Diane au Bain » du chevalier Josepin, il estime ainsi : « Le tableau où Diane est représentée dans le bain jetant de l'eau au visage d'Actéon est en si mauvais état, & si peu recommendable pour le mérite de la couleur et du dessein, que je n'en fais mention que pour suivre l'ordre du catalogue » (v.1 p. 138). Élève de Jean Mariette, le graveur François-Bernard Lépicié (1698-1755) exerce un temps en Angleterre. Rentré à Paris en 1737, il est agréé à l'Académie de peinture dont il devient, trois ans plus tard, secrétaire-historiographe. Son Recueil des vies des premiers peintres du roi demeure lui aussi inachevé. PROVENANCE : Pilippe-Laurent de Joubert, ex-libris héraldique contrecollé aux plats supérieurs. Trésorier des états du Languedoc, Philippe-Laurent de Joubert (1729-1792) installe dans son hôtel particulier de la place Vendôme un célèbre cabinet d'histoire naturelle. Amateur et collectionneur d'art, il est l'un des membres fondateurs de la Société des beaux-arts de Montpellier. Il est également associé, dès 1786, de l'Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture de Paris. Un portrait de Joubert peint par Jacques-Louis David est conservé au musée Fabre de Montpellier.
