Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Oversized hardcover, no dust jacket. Bound in a tidy library binding, with maroon cloth over boards. Gold lettering to the spine. Dated 1878 on the title page. It says, " Accepted for publication, January, 1878". Underneath this, a librarian has written in "published March Apr. 1879". No copyright page to be found. 277 pages. Good condition. Binding is strong and square. Cloth is lightly rubbed around the corners and head and foot of the boards. Some fading to the cloth as well. Pages are toned, but free of any marks or writing. Pages 73-90 have been neatly repaired with scotch tape. The corner at the foot had been torn, but was taped back together. There are several other small tape repairs to the page edges. A librarian has added in "Vol. 23, Article 5", to the title page. A few pencilled notes to the head of the front attached end paper. No other marks or notes to be found. Black and white line drawings. Overall good condition. This book is from the collection of Thomas Lovejoy. Dr. Lovejoy was an influential ecologist, field biologist, and activist; former head of the Amazon Biodiversity Center, World Wildlife Fund, and advisor to the United Nations and Smithsonian Institution. He is credited with introducing the term 'biological diversity' to the mainstream environmental movement. In addition, he was a passionate collector of books on the natural world.
