Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: very good. First Edition. 193pp. Folio [37 cm]; 1/4 calf with green pebbled cloth over boards, and gilt lettering and elaborate ornamental designs in gilt and blind on the spine and boards. Green marbled endpapers. Text in Swedish. Stitching visible in the inside margins of the pages near the center. Plate XIV is nearly detached. In the dust jacket, with light soiling, and intermittent small closed and open tears in the edges. Complete with all plates. Nordenskiold came to the American Southwest in 1891 at the invitation of Richard Wetherill, a local cattle rancher, who, along with Charles Mason, is credited with discovering the Mesa Verde ruins. This collection contains Nordenskiöld's notes and photographs of his travels and excavations in the area. It includes all seventeen full-page plates. These large plates include some absolutely exquisite photogravures of the ruins, including the double page centerfold of "The Cliff Palaces." Also includes 159 smaller black and white illustrations. Full-page map present at the rear. The earliest scholarly monograph on Mesa Verde. Mesa Verde comprises some of the most spectacular American Indian ruins in all of North America. "I shudder to think what Mesa Verde would be today had there been no Gustaf Nordenskiöld. It is through his book that the cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde became known and his volume might well be called the harbinger of Mesa Verde National Park as we know it today." - Robert Heyder, former National Park Superintendent.

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. First Edition. 11 1/8 X 14 1/2 Inches. 174 PP. First edition of the first serious archaeological study of the Mesa Verde and the Pueblo Indian cliff dwellings in the American Southwest. Profusely illustrated and bound in orignal printed blue paper with leather spine and tips. Translated into English by D. Lloyd Morgan. Scholarly study of the cliff dwellers of New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Utah. 61 plates / 12 of which are double-page (25 photographs, 9 photogravures, 6 tinted lithographs, 11 sepia-tone photographs, 10 line drawings, map & 94 text figures). There was also a Swedish language issue with fewer plates. Signed and inscribed by Adolf Erik Nordenskiold, Gustaf's father and noted mineralogist and Arctic Explorer, to fellow Finnish Independence leader Konrad 'Konni" Viktor Zilliacus. Both Nordenskiold and Zilliacus were active in the struggle for independence of Finland from Russia. Inscription reads, "Mr. Konni Zilliacus / with the best respects / from / AE Nordenskiold. A VERY IMPORTANT COPY LINKING THE FAMED NORDENSKIOLD FAMILY OF SCIENTISTS AND EXPLORERS TO FELLOW RUSSIAN REVOLUTIONARY ZILLIACUS. The book is complete, but exhibits damp-staining to the bottom 1/5 throughout. Pages 167-174 present, but have separated from binding. Binding is a bit shaken. Light toning and some wear to plates and tissue guards. While the book does have issues, it is most certainly a very important association copy and remains attractive.
