Octavo, green illus. cloth (hardcover), 206 pp. Very Good+, with light soiling to page edges; in a Fair+, mylar protected dust jacket with edgewear that includes chipping. From dust jacket: The quandaries that underlie every human crisis, whether that crisis is quietly resolved or violently expressed, are George Garrett's special concern. In these stories which range in mood from hilarious to grim he reveals, with a compassion that enlists the reader's understanding and sympathy, the ongoing, crucial debate within each of his characters. These are entertaining stories, well told -- so varied in matter, manner, and setting they might be the work of different authors except for the constants of Garrett's skill and his respect for the essential nature of his characters. Literature, Short Stories, Psychology.

The light blue boards are in very good condition (lightly bumped corners). The dust jacket is in fair condition (spots, edge crinkling and chipping, age-toned interior). 8 ¾ x 5 ¾, 206 pages, 17 ounces XX [From the inner flaps] The quandaries that underlie every human crisis, whether that crisis is quietly resolved or violently expressed, are George Garrett's special concern. In these stories which range in mood from hilarious to grim he reveals, with a compassion that enlists the reader's understanding and sympathy, the ongoing, crucial debate within each of his characters. These are entertaining stories, well told, so varied in matter, manner, and setting they might be the work of different authors except for the constants of Garrett's skill and his respect for the essential nature of his characters. The reader who skims the surface of these stories for their excitement and tension will find few characters with whom he can identify; the thoughtful reader, however, will establish kinship with even the most brutish, for each of Garrett's people wrestles with at least one aspect of mankind's predicament. Since 1957 George Garrett has published an impressive body of poetry and fiction. His short stories have appeared in many magazines and in two previous volumes, King of the Mountain (1957) and In the Briar Patch (1961). He has also published two novels, The Finished Man and Which Ones Are the Enemy?; and three volumes of poetry, The Reverend Ghost, The Sleeping Gypsy, and Abraham's Knife. XX George Garrett received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Princeton University. He has taught at Wesleyan University and Rice University and is presently on the English faculty at the University of Virginia. He won the Sewanee Review Fellowship in Poetry in 1958, The Grand Prix de Rome in 1959, and received a Ford Fellowship in Drama in 1961.
