Inscribed by M.E. Mulvihill on the Prelim. "Poems by Ephelia is the premier facsimile edition of the known writings to date of one of the most elusive of many 'lost' writers in English literature. Graced with 19 contemporary documents, this first, illustrated edition establishes Ephelia as an authentic, well connected writer in the London literary scene of the 1670s and '80s. In a long essay and six appendices, the author sheds new light on Ephelia's writings, fraternal and sororal circles, patronal link to the Villiers familyand offferss evidence from the 'Ephelia' texts and from contemporary sources to show that the most likely candidate is Mary Villiers (1622-1685). Searches involved conventiaonal routes, and travels on such specialized paths as heraldry watermarks, genealogy, handwriting, and portraiture." from the jacket flap. Paperback. Zustand: Good. There are poetry books, and then there is Peter Porter ? Collected Poems ? signed , no less ? which does not merely sit on the shelf but reclines there with the air of a man who has seen through several cultural fashions and found most of them slightly embarrassing. Published in 1984 by Oxford Universit…y Press, this is the sort of volume that gives Crappy Old Books a quiet but unmistakable sense of triumph. Not just a poetry collection, not just a collected poems, but a signed copy of Peter Porter: sharp, civilised, mordant, elegant, and rather better read than the average room. There is something inherently gratifying about a signed poetry book. A novel can be signed. A cookbook can be signed. But a signed collected poems has a special voltage, as though the author has personally endorsed your intention to become at least 17% more intellectually formidable. Peter Porter himself was one of those poets whose work seems permanently dressed for dinner but prepared for disappointment. Australian-born, London-seasoned, endlessly alert to culture, mortality, absurdity, and the comic indignities of modern life, he wrote with that rare combination of wit and gravity that makes lesser poets look either too solemn or too pleased with themselves. Porter could be funny without being frivolous, learned without being suffocating, and melancholy without ever collapsing into decorative gloom. In other words, dangerously competent. And then there is the phrase Collected Poems , which carries immense authority. It is not the title of a young writer hoping to make a splash. It is the title of someone who has put in the hours, survived the decades, and accumulated enough serious verse to require a proper gathering. A Collected Poems says: here is the body of work; kindly adjust your posture. It has all the quiet grandeur of a retrospective exhibition, except more portable and considerably easier to fit between two Penguins. The fact that this copy is signed only improves the atmosphere. Signed books always hint at a little moment of contact between the literary world and ordinary existence. Perhaps it was signed at a reading, at a table, after a lecture, in a queue of attentive people pretending not to be thrilled. Perhaps Porter wrote his name briskly, dryly, with the same intelligence he brought to his poems. Whatever the circumstances, the result is the same: this is no longer just a book, but an artefact with a slight electric charge of literary proximity. As sold by Crappy Old Books, this copy is in good condition , which is exactly what you want. A good-condition signed poetry hardback should look preserved rather than embalmed: respected, kept properly, but not hidden away like a museum relic under emotional lockdown. It should still feel like a book ? readable, ownable, shelfable ? only with that extra glint of distinction. Good condition means it has made it through the years with its dignity, usefulness and signature intact, which is really all one can ask of literature and people alike. There is also something wonderfully ironic about a signed collected poems appearing in the democratic chaos of second-hand bookselling. Once upon a time this would have been bought with intention ? perhaps by a real Porter admirer, perhaps by someone cultivating formidable taste, perhaps by a person who attended poetry events and knew exactly what they were doing. Now here it is again, resurfacing among the glorious jumble of biographies, theology, obscure manuals and half-forgotten paperbacks, still radiating literary class. Crappy Old Books approves of this immensely. High culture should be allowed a second lap. And what a presence it must have on a shelf. A signed Oxford University Press Collected Poems has enormous shelf authority. It suggests that somebody in the house may have views on metre, modernity, irony, mortality, and perhaps European art. It implies not only reading, but reading with standards. Even if you have not yet plunged through the entire volume, simply owning it improves the atmosphere of a room in measurable ways. Guests may assume you are more erudite. It would be churlish to correct them. For collectors, of course, it is especially appealing: Peter Porter, OUP, 1984, collected form, and signed . That is not nothing. For poetry readers, it offers the deeper pleasure of sustained company with a major voice ? one capable of being moving, sardonic, and intellectually alive sometimes within the same page. For anyone who likes books as objects, it has all the right ingredients: literary weight, physical presence, and that little mark of the hand that turns a respectable volume into a more singular one. It is also, let us admit, delightfully old-fashioned in the best way. A signed collected poems by Peter Porter belongs to an era when poetry could still carry public gravitas without needing to become a lifestyle accessory. No sprayed edges, no social-media confessionals, no blurbs promising healing via line breaks. Just poems: intelligent, exacting, funny, humane, and now physically touched by the poet who wrote them. Frankly, that is class. So here we have a good-condition signed copy of Peter Porter ? Collected Poems from 1984: elegant, substantial, literary, and a little bit grand without ever becoming pompous. It is the sort of book Crappy Old Books loves to send back into circulation ? not because it needs rescuing, exactly, but because it deserves another appreciative owner. If your shelves need more wit, more seriousness, more poetic authority, or simply a signed volume that looks as though it might know several things about civilisation?s decline, Peter Porter is ready to oblige. This is a handsome, clever, faintly formidable book, and a signed one at that ? which is really the sort of detail that turns an ordinary good book into a very pleasing find indeed. THIS BOOK BEARS THE CRAPPY OLD BOOKS STAMP. IF THAT IS UNDESIRABLE PLEASE DO NOT BUY THIS. THE STAMP MARKS WHICH IS USUALLY TO THE F.
