Polybe, (vers 200 av. J.-C. à Mégalopolis vers 118 av. J.-C.), hipparque, homme d'État, historien et théoricien politique, est l'un des historiens grecs les plus connus de son époque. Sur le plan politique, il joue un rôle important dans l'intégration de la Grèce centrale à l'empire romain après la victoire romaine sur la ligue achéenne en 146 av. J.-C. Son uvre d'historien retrace l'ascension de Rome, qu'il admire.
