Cracking to hinges, no damage to end papers. Some occasional mild cracking to gutters throughout, binding remains reasonably firm. Boards have mild edge wear with slight rubbing to surfaces. Mild crushing to spine ends. Sunning to spine. Gilt lettering is bright and clear. Boards have minor damp and dust stains. Book has a slight forward lean.

Pencil bookseller's annotations on front free endpaper. Foxing to a few preliminary pages including frontispiece; some offsetting from plates; otherwise clean. All plates present. Gutter starting to crack in one place but binding remaining firm.

Boards have noticeable edge wear with corner bumping and rubbing to surfaces. Moderate crushing to spine ends. Scuffing to rear board with fraying to cloth. Gilt lettering is dulled.

Oddly the illustrations of a moisture mark to the top right corner but the text pages do not. Almost as though the moisture was before the binding.

Contents Very good, clean & tight, signed inside front 'E Spencer 1866', a few corner tip folds, the binder has trimmed the base of pages a bit too closely. 2nd edition, all plates are black & white by Tuffen West. Title states 'with upwards of four hundred illustration by Tuffen West' . We believe this 1864 copy was the 2nd edition of this popular title. To sum up a remarkably clean copy.
