Throughout, numerous exquisite b/w plate etchings on steel, after J.M.W.Turner, all in fin condition with no marks. Book Condition, spine ends rubbed, spine hinges lightly rubbed, prize label to pastedown, Oxford Local Examination Manchester centre 1866. All pages & plates in fine condition. 823 pages. .

Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Complete 12 volume set. Half dark green crushed morocco leather bindings with green cloth boards (by Worrall of Birmingham). Spines ornately decorated in gilt, with three raised bands. Double gilt fillet to leather edges on boards. Top page edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Fading and light rubbing to spines. Rubbing to ends of spines and corners of boards. Browning and light scoring to outer page edges. Good solid bindings with no cracking to joints. The first William Turner illustrated edition, issued shortly after Scott's death. Engraved frontis and title page to each volume with tissue guard. Foxing to engravings and guards. Text has light browning to margins, otherwise clean throughout. The set differs from others we have seen, the engraved title pages contain the vignette and imprint, but omit the printed title and volume number. An important edition, in attractive early 20th century bindings. Overall condition is Very Good. Maroon hard leather boards with decorative gilt border on front, school motif of a lion on front board and 5 raised bands with gilt decorative spine and titles. Some rubbing to leather edges and a little missing to outer leather at top and bottom of spine. Gilt page edges. Prev owner's prize plate on front paste down awarded from St Colum's Edinburgh. Some foxing to outer pages and occasionally within but a very attractive copy.

With 26 engraved plates after Turner, including a frontispiece and vignette title page, and a folding facsimile of the author's handwriting. Printed over two columns in small print. Contemporary red full morocco, with raised bands, gilt titles and decoration to spine, and panelled gilt decoration to bevelled boards. All edges gilt, and marbled endpapers with gilt dentelle to turn-ins. Armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Light spotting to endpapers and facing leaves, otherwise internally crisp and clean. Upper hinge split but holding firm. Some wear to joints, just starting, otherwise a clean, attractive binding. Very good.
