Spines ornately decorated in gilt, with three raised bands. Double gilt fillet to leather edges on boards. Top page edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Fading and light rubbing to spines. Rubbing to ends of spines and corners of boards. Browning and light scoring to outer page edges. Good solid bindings with no cracking to joints. The first William Turner illustrated edition, issued shortly after Scott's death. Engraved frontis and title page to each volume with tissue guard. Foxing to engravings and guards. Text has light browning to margins, otherwise clean throughout. The set differs from others we have seen, the engraved title pages contain the vignette and imprint, but omit the printed title and volume number. An important edition, in attractive early 20th century bindings. Overall condition is Very Good. All edges gilt, and marbled endpapers with gilt dentelle to turn-ins. Armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Light spotting to endpapers and facing leaves, otherwise internally crisp and clean. Upper hinge split but holding firm. Some wear to joints, just starting, otherwise a clean, attractive binding. Very good.
