Erstausgabe
199 pp; 7 figs. Original cloth. Top & bottom of spine, and joints, very rubbed. Paper label on spine. Good. First Edition of this English translation. In 1928 the English translation by Horsley Gantt of Pavlov's Lectures on Conditioned Reflexes was published by International Publishers. When this Volume II of Pavlov's Lectures on Conditioned Reflexes was published in 1941, Volume I was reissued (the 1941 imprint of volume I is the third printing). Tipped to front flyleaf: TYPED LETTER, SIGNED, FROM HORSLEY GANTT TO STANLEY COBB (see photo). Letterhead: Phipps Psychiatric Clinic, The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Baltimore, Pavlovian Laboratory. The letter reads: "Dr. Stanley Cobb/ Harvard Medical School/ Boston, Mass./ Dear Stanley,/ I requested the publishers to send/ you with my compliments a copy of my "Lectures/ on Conditioned Reflexes: Conditioned Reflexes and Psychiatry", which is just out./ Sincerely yours, W. Horsley Gantt (signed "Horsley")." Ink stamp of "Psychiatric Department/ Massachusetts General Hospital/ Boston, Massachusetts" on bottom right corner of letter. This copy eventually came into the hands of George Gifford Jr. There isn't any ownership marking of his in the book, but there is a letter from George W. Thorn to Gifford in 1980. Thorn spent several years at John Hopkins (1938-1942) working with Horsley Gantt, before Harvard scooped him up in 1942 after Soma Weiss died unexpectedly. Offered with: TYPED LETTER, SIGNED, FROM GEORGE W. THORN, M.D. TO GEORGE E. GIFFORD, JR., M.D., 51 Brattle Street, Cambridge MA 02138, March 3, 1980. (With the envelope). Letterhead: George W. Thorn. M.D. 398 Brookline Ave. Boston MA 02215 (this is a typed correction of the printed address: 45 Shattuck Street, Boston MA 02115). Hersey Professor of the Theory and Practice of Physic, Emeritus, Harvard Medical School. Physician-in-Chief, Emeritus, Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. "Dear George: I was interested in the account in FOCUS of Pavlov's discussions on March 12. Unfortunately, I will be out of the city on that date. I am enclosing a clipping which may be of interest [the New York Times obituary of Gantt, see photo]. Dr. Gantt was a close associate and friend of mine at Hopkins and we worked together on many projects. I thought you might be interested to know about his relationship with Dr. Pavlov. Sincerely George W. Thorn, M.D. (signed "G.")".
