No Binding. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. TTHE AUTHOR WAS A NOTED CIVIL WAR HISTORIAN. THE BOOK PORTRAYS THE BITTER CONTROVERSIES OF THE CIVIL WAR BETWEEN THE NORTH AND THE SOUTH. ABRAHAM LINCOLN WAS ELECTED OVER HIS OPPOSITION TO THE EXPANSION OF SLAVERY INTO STATES IN THE WEST. LINCOLN ABHORRED THE CONCEPT OF SLAVERY BUT SUCH A SOUTHERN POSITION WAS UNACCEPTABLE EARLY ON BECAUSE OF THE ENGRAINED LONG STANDING SLAVE CULTURE AND ECONOMICS OF THE SOUTH. THE WORD COPPERHEAD WAS A DEROGATORY TERM, A DANGEROUS SNAKE, THAT WAS APPLIED TO THOSE IN THE NORTH WHO OPPOSED THE WAR AND SOUGHT TO ACHIEVE A OMPROMISE WITH THE THE SOUTHERN REBELS. THE PATRIOTISM AND ENTHUSIASIM THAT AROSE IN THE NORTH IN THE EARLY YEARS, WANED WHEN THE WAR BECAME ESSENTIALLY A STAND OFF AND A DISAPPOINTMENT FOR BOTH SIDES. GENERAL ROBERT E. LEE'S CONCEPT OF BREAKING THE NORTH'S WILL TO FIGHT BY AN INVASION INTO PENNSYLVANIA AT GETTYSBURG WAS AN ALL OUT EFFORT TO BREAK THE NORTH''S' SPIRIT. HOWEVER, THE BATTLE''S STANDOFF OUTCOME AND THE SOUTH'S WITHDRAWAL HAD THE OPPOSITE EFFECT. LINCOLN''S DECLARATION OF AN EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION BECAME A RALLYING CRY FOR THE NORTH. THE AUTHOR USES EDITORIAL COMMENTARY FROM THE NORTHERN NEWSPAPERS, TO EXEMPLIFY THE CONFUSION, COMPLEXITY AND DIVERSITY OF POSITIONS TAKEN BY THE NORTH'S PARTICIPANTS DURING THE WAR. THIS BOOK PROVIDES INSIGHT INTO THE MAJOR EVENTS, PRO AND CON, OF THE CIVIL WAS.
