hardcover. Zustand: Very Good in Dustjacket. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First Edition. New York. 1973. Morrow. 1st Edition. Very Good in Dustjacket. 0688000444. 146 pages. hardcover. Jacket illustration by James Barkley. keywords: African American Literature Drama America. DESCRIPTION - THE CRUCIFICADO is a volume o…f two plays: 'The Life and Times of J. Waiter Smintheus' and 'The Crucificado.' 'The Life and Times of J. 'Walter Smintheus' was produced at the New York Shakespeare Festival Public Theater in April, 1971. Walter Jones was the director. The play was showcased at ANTA in February, 1971, with Earle Hyman playing the title role. The action of the play takes place in a mental institution and the thread of the story is seen through flashbacks. J. Walter Smintheus is a black intellectual, southern and wealthy, or at least from a wealthy family. When we first meet him he is a graduate student at Cornell and is already afflicted with the affectations of 'civilization.' His manner is that of the British aristocracy; he detests familiarity, values form over function, in short, is 'nice' but unreal, a creation of J. Walter Thompson. Smintheus would be a comic figure except for the fact that he had knowledge of his condition. His response to life was art through the written word. The world would not, however, allow him this luxury. His parents wanted him to become a prominent scholar, his wife wanted him to enter into the swirl of high society, his mistress gave him syphilis, his employer (he was a university teacher) canned him for doing his job, teaching, and finally he was overwhelmed by racism, the ultimate absurdity. All of this he endured, urged on by his need to create and the knowledge that he soon would have a person (his best friend is in prison) who understood him and who would help him. Robert, his friend, is killed, and Smintheus abandons this world, losing even his name, to accept the world of 'the insane, just sitting, watching the stars break up on the floor.' 'The Crucificado' was first performed at Vinnette Carroll's Urban Arts Corps in June, 1972. It was directed by Darryl Hill. The play depicts the quest of Morose for peace. The world he lives in is insane, people starve while others have banquets; men, as soldiers, are praised for murdering while others are convicted for stealing. There is no sense to the world. The knowledge of his situation is so painful to Morose that he turns to heroin; this failing, to sex. His actions are overseen by a chorus of three men: Gongora, the blind poet (blinded because he is a poet and has seen his father naked); Pedro, a man with only the vision of his oppressors; and Rafael, a sensitive young 'flame.' The play has over thirty scenes, each one commenting upon the condition of man. There is no story, in the traditional sense, but there is excitement and drama. inventory #25625.
