Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. Please see any and all photos connected with this listing. Cover and spine are good with only mild shelf/rub wear. No dog-eared corners. Solid Binding. All pages intact and legible. Clean. No store stamps. --- --- Contains the full novels. . .A QUESTION OF UPBRINGING --- A BUYER'S MARKET --- THE ACCEPTANCE WORLD. . .Four very different young men on the threshold of manhood are the central figures of the first in the series. One is the narrator, Jenkins, a budding writer. One is Templer, already a passionate womanizer. One is Stringham, aristocratic and restless. And the last is Widmerpool, as hopelessly awkward as he is intensely ambitious. Amid the fever of the 1920's and the first chill of the 30's, these four gain their initiations into sex, society, business and art, in fiction that explores every dramatically shifting level of an England desperately clinging to tradition even while being whirled irresistibly onward by time and change. . .See photos for additional content. . .

Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine-. First Edition. First Impression of the third installment of Powell's monumental 12-volume literary landmark. Small 8vo: [8],214pp. Publisher's red cloth, spine stamped in gilt within black title block; first-issue (with wide flaps) Broom-Lynne dust jacket, priced 12s/6d. Fine, tight, and square (and probably unread), wih dusty top edge and minor bump of tail of spine, neat owner inscription to front end-paper; about Fine jacket, very discretly restored to head of spine panel (involving neither lettering nor design), else without flaw. Elusive in this condition. Lilley A.11a. Time 100. "Beginning in the 1920 s, A Dance to the Music of Time follows the lives of a group of English friends and acquaintances as they make their various ways through life: meeting and parting, succeeding and failing, loving and hating, living and dying. There is ample room for both comedy and tragedy in this capacious, large-hearted work, but Powell's real triumph is the way he catches the rhythm of fate itself, the way it brings people together, only to spin them apart, then reunite them later as near-strangers, transformed in unexpected ways by the intervening years." (Time 100) Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 1st Edition. A lovely, Fine set of A Dance to the Music of Time, one of the highspots of post-war English fiction, published over a 25-year period from 1951-75; comprising NINE FIRST PRINTINGS and three later impressions from the 1970s (Vols. 1-3: A Question of Upbringing, 9th, 1977; A Buyer's Market, 6th, 1974; and The Acceptance World, 5th 1972). Volume 8, The Soldier's Art, has been SIGNED by Anthony Powell on a plate to the ffep (and dated to the year of publication, 1966). All twelve volumes are crisp and clean: ten books are Fine and two (The Acceptance World & Hearing Secret Harmonies) are very nearly Fine, marred only by the lightest scattering of tiny spots to the edge of the page block. All are free from previous owner names and inscriptions; one volume, The Acceptance World, has the elegant bookplate of a Wiltshire country house to the front pastedown. Each is complete with its original Broome-Lynne designed dustwrapper: eight are Fine, two are very nearly Fine, and two are Near Fine - all are bright and vibrant, presenting beautifully as a harmonious and consistent set, and scarce thus. One dustwrapper has been clipped, two have been clipped-and-repriced by the publisher, and nine are unclipped. The Kindly Ones is a review copy and has a Heinemann (Australian division) review slip loosely laid-in. Dustwrapper notes: A Question of Upbringing: Fine. A Buyer's Market: Near Fine+. Buch Erstausgabe
First editions, first printings. Published by William Heinemann in London between 1951 and 1975. This is a set of very good (or better) copies in twelve volumes. 'A Buyer's Market' in the first issue dust wrapper with wider flaps. Each of the volumes are in similar condition, so will be described as one unless there are other points to note. The dust wrappers are frontally clean and not toned but suffer from some slight separation to the top of the spines, with some light rubbing at the bottom edges. The rear panels are generally marked by handling, but certain ones, particularly the seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth and eleventh volumes are clean. The first title, 'A Question of Upbringing' has a small portion of restorative repair to the foot of the dust wrapper. 'A Buyers Market' has been price clipped, but the others have not. The internals are clean throughout, with only 'Temporary Kings' and 'Hearing Secret Harmonies' having some traces of previous owners ink, both inscriptions are not pervasive. The boards are generally free from notable chips and marks and the text blocks are often bright and white, with some instances of sparse foxing. Overall, these are very good, or better, copies of the classic 'A Dance to the Music of Time' set. Published between 1951 and 1975 to critical acclaim. The story is an often comic examination of movements and manners, power and passivity in English political, cultural and military life in the mid-twentieth century.
