XX [From the dust jacket] Upriver from Colombia's Cartagena a group of small farmers have hacked out of the jungle for each family a few acres of rich arable land. They have been virtual serfs on big estates but now at last they are themselves owners of land, in a position to sell their produce to the townsfolk. But the town's marketing regulations are rigged against the free farmers by grafting officials, and at the end of each year the deep-forest people find that for all the produce they have laboriously taken to town they have received only enough money to buy a few yards of cloth and an occasional machete. In desperation, they think of giving back to the government their hard-won land. Then a whisper comes upriver from Cartagena of a way for workers to get something better than a bare existence for their labor. The chosen man to find out about this wonderful new plan is Luis Romero, a young farmer, and Deep Forest is the story of Luis from the time he works his way down to the awesome city until, stooped and worn, he and such as he have reached a pinnacle of success so high that they can buy a new machete almost as soon as the old one is worn down to a slim sliver of steel. Deep Forest is an idyll of Spartan existence that is dignified and deeply touching. Its rhythm is slow, its colors dark and rich. [The Author] NORMAN E. NYGAARD was born in 1897 in Minneapolis and was educated for the ministry at Macalester College, St. Paul; the University of Montpelier, France; the Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Omaha; the Municipal University at Omaha (M.A. 1923) ; and Tarkio College, Tarkio, Missouri. He was ordained to the ministry in 1923 and in the same year left for South America. Following a severe illness he came back to the States and since then has had churches in Albert Lea, Minnesota ; Boulder, Colorado; Des Moines; Los Angeles; Syracuse; and Steubenville, Ohio. During the war he served as Chaplain of the Lockheed Overseas Airbase in North Ireland. Dr. Nygaard is now at the Westminster Church in Steubenville, Ohio.
