The original pages, as might be expected, are age-discoulred with some foxing but all text & illus are still clear. Much earlier repairs to closed tears have been made and the ghost of these can be seen on some pages however, considering the book is nearly 300 years old it is in remarkable condition. (315g).

Seven folding engraved astronomical plates including Thomas Wright's Great Orrery, all signed by R. Cushee. Charts and tables in the text. Printed side- and foot-notes. Head- and tail-pieces. Decorative woodcut initials. Rear index. Condition: VERY GOOD. Binding tight and secure, the spine sympathetically re-backed, new endpapers. All seven plates present, as called for. Just a touch of browning and spotting, but largely a clean well-preserved copy. Notes: An expansion of Harris s 1703 work, including a lengthy description of the orrery. This work proved to be a popular handbook on globes which ran into many editions. Harris begins with an introduction to the latest models of globes, celestial and terrestrial. He then demonstrates how to use the globes to solve problems, including finding latitudes and longitudes for any given place, finding the position of the sun at any given date, discovering on which date the sun will be directly overhead in any given spot in the torrid zone, computing the length of any given day of the year, finding the altitude of a star, and so on (Taylor, The Mathematical Practitioners). Joseph Harris (1702-64) began as a blacksmith in Cornwall with an interest in mathematics. He designed and made mathematical and navigational instruments, and his interest in navigation led him to voyage to Mexico and Jamaica. He also taught mathematics, and in 1748 became Master of the Mint in the Tower of London. These interests are reflected in his publications on coinage and navigation. The two publishers of the book were also practical savants: Thomas Wright was a maker of scientific instruments, who specialised in the orrery, while Richard Cushee (who died in about 1732: the publisher here is probably his son) was a maker of globes and was the engraver of the plates in this book.

Cushee, globe-maker at the Globe and Sun, between St. Dunstan's Church and Chancery-Lane, both in Fleet-Street. Joseph Harris (1703-1764), was a blacksmith, astronomer, navigator, economist, natural philosopher and government adviser and King's assay Master at the Royal Mint. Joseph appears to have moved in with John Senex, notable chart- and map-maker, and was perhaps apprenticed to, but certainly working with Senex, and the co-operated to produce at least two star-maps. Fine copy.

 In about 1724 Harris moved in with John Senex (1678-1740), notable chart- and map-maker. They co-operated to produce at least two star-maps, Stellarum Fixarum Hemisphaerium Australe and Boreale; in the plane of the equator; Harris name is writ large in the headline text, though the copyright remained in the hands of Senex, after his death his wife sold it. A copy of Harris's chart was in the library of Mme. Emilie du Chatelet, mistress and colleague of Voltaire, which may be the one now in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and perhaps seized from her son's library when he was beheaded during the French Revolution. Although the pair of star maps in the plane of the equator are well represented in astronomy museums, there may also be a further pair in the plane of the ecliptic. It is likely that production of these charts was related to the premature, much contested and hotly resented publication by Halley and Newton of Flamsteed's long delayed observations of the stars. In the Australe chart Joseph commemorates Polish astronomer Hevelius and King Jan III Sobieski's defeat of the invading Ottoman Turks in the 1683 Battle of Vienna, for the constellation Scutum is named Scutum Sobiescanum and illustrated with a glowing crucifix and the initials INRI. It is not easy to date the first publication of these charts, partly because the date 1690 too is large in the title and the facile tendency has been to take that as the publication date; but 1690 is before Harris was born and during the childhood of Senex. The most likely period for its creation is when Harris was working for John Senex, from January 1725 until he left on a voyage to Vera Cruz in June of that same year. When he returned from Vera Cruz in April 1728 Harris immediately started work on self-publishing his Treatise of Navigation and producing for Thomas Wright, instrument maker, his Description and Use of the Globe; and the Orrery. Wolfgang Steinicke in 'William Herschel, Flamsteed Numbers and Harris's Star Maps' says that these star-maps were still being relied on by William Herschel towards the end of the century. Contemporary full spotted calf with five raised bands at the spine, title in gilt to red morocco lettering piece in one compartment, decorative blind-stamped borders to the panels; minor bumping and rubbing to extremities, shallow one inch split at head of front gutter, several small wormholes in leather rear panel. AN ATTRACTIVE EXAMPLE OF THIS POPULAR AND INFLUENTIAL WORK ON GLOBES, which appeared in ten editions before 1768. Second edition. A one-time blacksmith, Harris was discovered by Hally after moving to London in 1724. He was sent on two voyages of the Indies to test navigational instruments, and the present work was first published in between the two voyages.
