It is in answering this question that Nathan Schlessinger and Fred Robbins arrive at their developmental approach to analytic practice. Through their intensive follow-up studies, the authors are able to identify key variables in the psychoanalytic process and assess the implications for both theory and technique. What emerges from their review of the clinical material gathered in the follow-up study is the importance of the self-analytic function as a learned mode of coping with conflict. Equally striking is the exploration of the enduring significance of the analytic alliance in regulating tension.
