Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Devil's Tor', first published in 1932, is the undoubted masterpiece of David Lindsay. Many of the extraordinary and disturbing themes of his first and most famous work, 'A Voyage to Arcturus' (1920), are explored more deeply and expressed more clearly in this book. The story describes the experiences and mental processes of various people drawn by an active Fate to Devil's Tor, a minor Dartmoor height. Lives are transformed, shattered and ended by forces that can remake stars and galaxies. Nowhere in printed English is the working of the Unseen in living minds more vividly drawn than in David Lindsay; and nowhere in Lindsay more magnificently than in 'Devil's Tor'.…

Devil's Tor expanded upon psychological and metaphysical themes found in his first work, A Voyage to Arcturus, a book which J. R. R. Tolkien himself said he read "with avidity." (Humphrey Carpenter, ed. The Letters of J. R. R. Tolkien. 1981). The plot, difficult to describe due to its breadth and scope, revolves around the uniting of two halves of a powerful talisman, and the potential apocalypse caused by that act. Barron, in his Fantasy and Horror, describes the work as "Marvelously atmospheric and admirably conscientious in its design of a hypothetical mythology and the metaphysics to go with it." A quite uncommon signed copy of arguably the magnum opus of this highly influential fantasy author. Barron, Fantasy and Horror 5-181, Bleiler 1022, Currey pg 314 (Binding A), Locke, Spectrum of Fantasy pg 140.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Ingrid Fleming has always believed a goddess lies buried beneath the forbidding, Devil-headed rock-pile atop Devil's Tor. But when the pile is shattered in a sudden storm, it's her cousin, Hugh Drapier, who enters the newly-revealed tomb.Drapier has recently arrived from Tibet, where an encounter with the adventurer Henry Saltfleet and the archeologist Stephen Arsinal has left him in possession of a stolen sacred stone, the half of a broken whole, which has the power to induce visions of its arrival on Earth in the early days of primitive humanity.Arsinal believes the stone to be sacred to the Great Mother, and key to a prophecy that will unite a chosen man and woman, and bring about the birth of a new saviour. He and Saltfleet return to England on Drapier's trail, and arrive in Dartmoor just as the machinery of a thousands-year-long supernatural fate begins its final turnA troubled, troubling, ambitious and difficult work that David Lindsay himself called his 'monster', Devil's Tor answers the imaginative pyrotechnics of Lindsay's first novel, A Voyage to Arcturus, with a sustained maturity of insight into the intensely-felt and deeply-examined inner lives of its handful of characters, and the fate that has brought them together at the dawn of a new human era.At times irrecoverably tangled in the attitudes of its day, Devil's Tor nevertheless builds to a transcendent final vision of the ultimate purpose of human life and suffering.…
