Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. This diary recounts the day-to-day experiences of Thomas Flint, a young doctor from North Anson, Maine, who made two trips to California between 1851 and 1855. He travelled via Panama twice (including a return to Maine with 30-some pounds of gold), and finally returning to California overland, driving 2,000 head of sheep, cattle, horses and oxen, in partnership with his brother, Benjamin Flint, and cousin, Llewellyn Bixby. This became the basis for their founding Flint, Bixby & Co., and numerous subsequent business interests. The main part of the diary covers the second trip to California, in 1853 and 1854, overland and driving a herd of livestock though the Illinois - Nebraska - Wyoming - Utah route to California. The detailed day by day entries describe distance, difficulties with the herds, crossing rivers, encounters with American Indians, Mormons, and other groups heading west on the same trail. It is full of very specific detail - daily logs of mileage, people they encounter, expenditures, income from trading along the way, and so on. Flint wrote "my pistol, whether awake or asleep was always at my right hand." This is a reprint of the original edition published by the Historical Society of Southern California, edited by Waldemar Westergaard. The text has been reset, and there are additional introductory materials and notes. This item is printed on demand. "Second edition" (so stated on the front wrapper but debatable]. Small octavo. 113, [1] pp. Publisher's gray wrappers lettered in blue. Abrasion to head of spine and final leaf off its lower staple. Despite these flaws a clean and attraciver copyThomas Flint graduated Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1949. His brother had gone to California as a '49er and Thomas was only held-up as he couldn't readily find a group to wth whom he could make the overland trek. Eventually he sailed, walked to Panama route, sailed again and arrived in in San Francisco on July 7th, 1852. On August 8, he started for Coloma, where he remained until January 9, 1852, engaged in mining and in the cattle and beef business. He returned to San Francisco in November with quite the reputation as a doctor/surgeon. On Christmas day of 1952 he left for the East Coast, again by sea. But "In the spring of 1853, he started again for California, again overland, as had been his intention on coming East. He went to Terre Haute, Indiana, the most westerly point which could then be reached by rail, and there was formed the firm of Flint, Bixby & Company, which afterward became so widely known through its extensive operations in California, composed of Dr. Thomas Flint, his brother Benjamin, and Llewellyn Bixby, his cousin. " (Luther A. Ingersoll, 1893). They made their way slowly and passed through Mountain Meadows in Utah and reached the San Gabriel Mission in early early 1854. In July of 1855 they made their way northward and upon seeing the beauty and convenience of the San Juan Valley in October of the same year they decided to purchase the the San Justo ranch from Francisco Perez Pacheco. Flint went on to become one of the wealthiest and most connected men in the state of California. The property Flint et. al. purchased soon became the home of the city of Hollister [thus the local paper's interest in reprinting this classic California title].
