Extraordinary stories are not uncommon in the world of books: the tales of Sir Thomas Phillipps and hist collections or of the Boswell papers would be branded outrageous fiction if they were not fully documented as fact. The following narrative of the life of my friend Hans P. Kraus is no less incredible, and no less true." (H. W. Liebert). - Mit Index. - Sehr gut erhalten.

First Edition. Signed by the author Hans P. Kraus in the year of publication to Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. who once owned a Gutenberg Bible among other amazing works. Signed and inscribed by Kraus quoting his description of Houghton that is in the printed text: ÒTo Arthur, the great collector, with best wishes, Hans, Sept 12, 1978Ó. Arthur A. Houghton, Jr is discussed in the text on page 187 where Kraus visits at HoughtonÕs offices and descrbes him as ÒArthur Houghton, Jr., the great collector.Ó in the book Kraus tells of bringing the first three editions of ChaucerÕs Canterbury Tales to HoughtonÕs Fifth Avenue office for consideration. Kraus writes: ÒHe had inquired about them, and a Houghton inquiry was not to be taken lightly; he was one of the nationÕs foremost book collectors. I mentioned nothing about the books having already been sold to someone else and being no longer my property. At his office, there was no vacant table so Houghton and I knelt on the floor to examine the books. I could tell he very much wanted to buy them. We settled on a figure and he requested 24 hours to think it over.Ó Kraus goes on to complete the story of how, though Houghton wanted the books badly, they were eventually returned to the original purchaser. Such are the ways of rare book dealing. Illustrated. Near fine slightly handled copy in a near fine dust jacket. The autobiography of the noted bibliophile, book seller, and collector, H.P. Kraus, who dominated the New York scene for fifty years. Arthur A. Houghton (1906 - 1990) was an American industrialist who served as the president of Steuben Glass Works, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the New York Philharmonic. In 1942 he endowed Houghton Library at Harvard as a repository for the universityÕs collections of rare books and manuscripts.
