Hardcover. Zustand: Near fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near fine. First Edition. An early example of an alternative history, the genre for which Turtledove is best known. The seven stories in this collection are all set in a world where the early human species Homo erectus did not go extinct and lived side-by-side with Homo sapiens. According to Turtledove's preface, he got the idea from reading Stephen Jay Gould's essays. Introduction by Isaac Asimov. xi, 292 pages. First edition (first printing, with no indication of later printings). A bit of wear on the corners, else a near fine copy in a near fine dust jacket. There is no dedication in the book, so this may be the best possible copy of A Different Flesh. It is inscribed, "3-25-88. For Stephen Jay Gould, who gave me a good idea. All the bad ones in here are mine. Best, Harry Turtledove." This copy came from Gould's Harvard office library and has a posthumous bookplate laid in indicating the provenance.
