In French. In contemporary half calf. Bookplate to front paste down. The first two works make up the complete and very scarce first and only edition of 'Les Deux Hermites Dedie A Mylord Lyttelton'. Published in 1773. ESTC Citation No. T135382. With the dedication leaf to Lord Lyttelton. A French epistolary novel, written by Noel Joseph Desenfans. Desenfans is now best known as an art dealer, particulary for his relationship with Parisian dealer Jean-Baptiste-Pierre Lebrun. In 1790 he was asked to curate the National Art collection for Poland, which included Rembrandt, Rubens and Van Dyck. Les Deux Hermites Dedie A Mylord Lyttelton was his second work of literature after the novella 'Sulmiste et Sergi' and reflects his Enlightenment views of the abuse of political power and friendship and benevolence through a series of letters between two 'hermits'. The third volume bound is an early Geneva printing of Rousseau's groundbreaking work 'Discours qui a remporteÌ le prix aÌ l'Academie de Dijon, en l'anneÌe 1750'. A very scarce early edition, published in Geneva by Philibert. Undated, dated c1754 from a copy held at The University of Cambridge Library, which is the only copy of this work held institutionally in the UK. First published in 1750. Rousseau's breakout work, 'Discourse on the Sciences and the Arts' transformed him into a leading figure in Enlightenment thinking, arguing that development in the sciences does not necessarily make people morally better and in fact can have the opposite effect. The essay was extremely controversial, and is considered the foundational principle to what was later expanded into his other works, such as'Discourse on the Origin of Inequality', 'The Social Contract' and 'Émile'. The fourth and final bound title is the first edition of 'Réponse au Discours de mr. Rousseau, qui a remporté le prix de l'Académie de Dijon. The work was first published in the September 1751 issue of the 'Mercure de France'. Vanishingly scarce. Publisher unknown, although The British Library believe the work was published in Geneva. Although published anonymous, authorship is generally attributed to StanisÅaw I LeszczyÅski, the former King of Poland and Duke of Lorraine. However, Jesuit Joseph de Menoux is also linked to its editing. Rousseau himself believed the king to be the author. The essay refuted Rousseau's essay (which is the work bound prior to this in this copy) arguing that knowledge is morally neutral and that the sciences help to improve medicine, government and justice. A uniquely bound collection of scarce and important Enlightenment works. In half calf with marbled boards. Externally smart with rubbing to the boards and extremities. Slight bumping to extremities. Rubbing to spine resulting in cracking to leather. Bookplate to front paste down. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with the odd spot and age toning.
