Includes "Some observations concerning the ordering of wines" (caption title) by Christopher Merret on pages 208-235. Small 8vo, approximately, 165 x 100 mm, 6½ x 4 inches, pages: [14], 1-208, 207-235, [1]-errata, page 138 misnumbered 128, some errors in pagination in the Vintners section, but all catch words correct, no pages missing, bound in full calf, original contemporary covers rebacked to match, gilt lettered label, author and date. Slight scuffing and wear to corners, shallow crease to 2 leaves, slight cropping to top margin, no loss to text, tiny closed tear to1 top margin, tip of lower corner missing from 1 page. nowhere near text, no loss, old ink name to first paste-down, tiny old ink smudged price to top of general title page, occasional small pale mark to margins, slight pale age-browning, otherwise a very good clean copy. This edition is practically a reprint of the first edition of 1669 but has been enlarged by by the insertion of a few Latin quotations and one or two paragraphs. The second discourse is devoted to wine, in particular methods for preventing their putrefaction, together with "Some Observations on the Ordering of Wines" by Christopher Merret. Merret was the first person to document that the addition of sugar to wine caused a secondary fermentation that turned it into a sparkling wine.
