Ink signature on title page. Robert Wallace (1697-1771) was a minister of the Church of Scotland as well as an economist. In this work, first published in 1753, Wallace criti…cizes the chapter called "Populousness of Ancient Nations" in David Hume's "Political Discourses." Wallace argued that the population of the ancient world was greater than in modern times, a theory which Hume refuted. Nevertheless, this work, as well as Wallace's "Characteristics of the Present State of Great Britain" (1761) influenced the population growth theories of Robert Malthus. The fact that this dissertation was reprinted 56 years after its original publication indicates the revival of interest in population studies once Malthus published.

According to Hazlitt (The Spirit of the Age), "both the principle of the necessary increase of the population beyond the means of subsistence, and the application of that principle as a final obstacle to all Utopian perfectibility schemes, are borrowed by Mr. Malthus from Wallace's work." The Dissertation On The Numbers Of Mankind contains the substance of a paper read before the Philosophical Society of Edinburgh sometime before 1745. It is considerably expanded by a lengthy appendix, in which Wallace vigorously undertakes to refute the contentions of Hume as expounded in the chapter on the Populousness of Ancient Nations in his Political Discourses (1752).
