First published in 1797, this was a popular anti-tobacco tract which was also reprinted in editions of 1798, 1805, as well as this last lifetime London edition (a New York edition appeared in 1829). "Fairholt notices that DISSERTATION 'was one of the bitterest attacks on the habit, and becme the textbook of the oppositionists'" (Brooks, Arents Catalogue). A scarce early anti-smoking pamphlet highlighting the respiratory and muscular risks of tobacco, using a pigeon to test the effects on. The fourth edition with many additions and improvements.

First edition, iv, 32pp., upper margin of title and 'To the readers' leaf closely shaved by the binders knife (excising the word "A" from title), some light foxing and staining, inoffensive waterstain to lower gutter margin, new endpapers, recent cloth with printed paper label on upper cover. Adam Clarke (1762-1832) was an Irish born Wesleyan divine. He is probably best known for his Bibliographical Dictionary and commentary on the Bible, but I believe that his first published work is his Dissertation on the Use and Abuse of Tobacco. This was a popular anti-tobacco tract which was also reprinted several times during his life. It was one of the bitterest attacks on the habit, and became the textbook of the oppositionists. The work highlights the respiratory and muscular risks of using tobacco, and tells of the results of tests carried out on pigeons and a cat.

First edition, with publisher's "advertisment" dated New York, Feb. 10, 1812. 283 pp. Oroginal full tree claf, spine lined in gilt and with gilt lettered red leather spine label. A tight example, binding rubbed about the edges and with some scuffing to the spine strip. Scattered foxing to the text. Included with the title piece and with separate title pages with 1812 imprints are Clarke's "Discourse on The History of The Rich Man and The Beggar: From Luke XVI 19-31", "A Narrative on the Last Illness And Death of Richard Porson, A.M.[etc]" with a facsimile of an ancient Greek inscription, "A Dissertation on the Use and Abuse of Tobacco.humbly addressed To All The Tobacco Consumers; especially to those among Religious People" , "An Address to the Philogical Society of Manchester read at The Anniversary of Their Institution". The key piece in this compilation is Clarke's famous "Disseratation on the Use and Abuse Of Tobacco" which has first printed in London in 1797 and appears in an American printing here for the first time.
