The book delves into the language, dating styles, and other aspects of the diplomatic documents themselves, including letters and treaties. The book examines the use of Latin and French in diplomatic communication, highlighting the changing fortunes of these languages. Chaplais discusses the intricacies of dating styles and the importance of both written records and memory in diplomatic affairs. The book may be challenging for those without a strong understanding of Latin and French, as many texts are presented in their original languages without translation. ; Bookplate of George Peddy Guttino, who taught at Emory for 32 years and was a distinguished and beloved professor and author.
