Edition originale de cette nouvelle du marquis de Sade, établie fidèlement par Anatole France d'après le manuscrit autographe. D'abord composée pour prendre place dans le recueil 'Les Crimes de l'amour', l'oeuvre n'avait jamais été publiée. Frontispice gravé à l'eau-forte par G. Charpentier; page de titre ornée d'un grand encadrement de style rocaille imprimé en sépia; bandeaux et culs-de-lampe. "Ce conte, édité par Anatole France, est présenté dans sa notice comme une nouvelle qui lui sert de prétexte pour évoquer 'le malade et la maladie' ainsi que ses écrits monstrueux" (J.-C.
