Zustand: Used. In the whimsical realm of 2008, where the notion of ?change? was as fashionable as a questionable haircut, ARUP, the mysterious architect of thought, unleashed upon the world a curious tome entitled "Drivers Of Change." This isn?t your run-of-the-mill self-help manual or a droll economic analysis; nay, this is a kaleidoscopic exploration of what spurs transformation in society, as seen through the lens of those who?dare we say?drive the proverbial bus of innovation. A title that promises to be as enlightening as it is enigmatic, it invites you to strap in and prepare for the ride of a lifetime, or at least a mildly intriguing jaunt through the minds of its contributors. Drivers Of Change is a box set by Arup. The box is a neat plastic sleeve in which there are 6 sets of cards entitled: Ubanisation Water Energy Waste Climate Change Demographis Each set of cards contains about 30-40 postcard style cards with a picture and some text on important issues. For example, in the Ubanisation set some of the cards read - on the back there is details discussion and notes. Can cities provide enough jobs? around 85% of new jobs are created in the informal economy Is your city in the right place? 50% of cities with over 2m people are at risk of earthquakes above 7.5 How will you keep cool? urbanisation creates heat islands that require air conditioning and refrigeration and Los Angeles spends $100m year on cooling. These are really nifty little cards and sure to get you thinking no matter how out of date they are. Picture it: a group of forward-thinkers gathered around a table with a pot of overpriced artisan coffee, brainstorming how best to elucidate the complex interplay of political, economic, and social factors that propel society into the future?or perhaps simply into a deeper state of confusion. With each turn of the page, you can almost feel the collective existential dread of 2008 seeping through the ink, as the authors ponder whether their ideas will stand the test of time or be immediately buried beneath the weight of another dystopian trend. One might argue that this is less about driving change and more about navigating the slippery slopes of what?s to come with a three-point turn. As you leaf through the pages, be prepared for a delightful mélange of thought-provoking essays and slightly pretentious musings, all adorned with graphs that could make even the most ardent statistician weep for joy. The contributors, presumably a mix of urban planners, social theorists, and perhaps that one friend who always has a better idea, tackle an array of topics, including, but not limited to: The impact of climate change on urban design (spoiler: it?s not good) How social media has become the new town square (and that?s not entirely a good thing) The role of technology in evolving human interaction (think more ghosting and less meaningful conversation) Public policy?s ever-elusive quest for relevance (hint: it?s like trying to find a clean bathroom in a festival) Globalization versus localism: the ultimate tug-of-war Much like a fine wine that?s been left uncorked for a tad too long, "Drivers Of Change" has aged?some might say sluggishly. The prose harkens back to a time when PowerPoint was the zenith of visual communication, and the authors? fervor for their subject matter clashes amusingly with the casual reader?s indifference. If you?ve ever wondered what a mid-2000s think tank might produce while under the influence of too many sandwiches from the conference buffet, look no further; this is it. Though it lacks the finesse of a bestseller, ?Drivers Of Change? is an artifact of its time, a veritable time capsule of thought that leaves one pondering if the drivers are still in the driver?s seat. Or have they perhaps pulled over for an impromptu nap on the side of the road? Either way, it?s a fascinating read?if only for the sake of seeing how far we?ve come (or how far we?ve yet to go). Condition: This used copy has all the charm of a well-loved book, with dog-eared pages and the faint scent of old coffee lingering between its covers?a perfect companion for those who appreciate the aged patina of wisdom (or at least the remnants of a bygone era). There may be a few rogue coffee stains, which only enhance its character, and perhaps a marginalia note or two that will have you questioning the intelligence of the previous reader. It?s like adopting a pet with a backstory: not perfect, but full of personality. So, dear reader, if you?re ready to embrace the quirks of a second-hand title that has seen the ebb and flow of societal musings, consider adding "Drivers Of Change" to your collection. It?s available, of course, as sold by Crappy Old Books, where the past is not just a memory; it?s a shelf full of delightful oddities. Who knows? This book might just inspire you to become a driver of change in your own right?or at the very least, provide you with excellent conversation starters at dinner parties.
