Paperback. Zustand: VG. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. Dust jacket condition: Good. Chip missing from top edge of front jacket panel. Text free of underlining, writing and highlighting. Revised Edition. Electronic music is one of the most important musical developments of our century. Yet, as Elliott Schwartz remarks in his preface to this book, "until now, writing on the subject has assumed a level of significant experience-either 'electronic' or musical or both-on the reader's part." This book introduces the reader to both the historical aspects and the important aesthetic considerations of electronic music and relates electronic developments to the general condition of all twentieth-century music. Using a minimum of technical jargon, Elliott Schwartz helps the reader to understand the electronic-music scene and even to experiment with electronic composition. ELECTRONIC MUSIC begins by asking the reader to consider electronic music as a giant performing instrument that has opened up new musical possibilities in the twentieth century just as the piano did in the nineteenth. The author also reminds us that, through classical recordings, Muzak, and pop groups, the use of electronic technique to manipulate sound has become much more closely related to our common musical experience than most of us realize. Against this background, Elliott Schwartz describes some of the important musical developments that led to composers' interest in electronics, traces the history of electronic instrumentation itself, and provides a basic introduction to the workings of the classic tape studio, the RCA synthesizer, and computer-generated sound. The present-day electronic-music scene is dealt with extensively, with constant reference to the past and to future possibilities. More than twenty compositions by the same number of composers are discussed in detail, and many others are considered in relation to the general historical and aesthetic framework of twentieth-century music. In a section devoted to the present and future effects of the electronic revolution on our musical habits, the author discusses such topics as the nature of performance, jazz, rock, pop and serious music, and the teaching of music. A separate section of the book contains twenty-three essays on electronic music by composers Lukas Foss, Otto Luening, Pauline Oliveros, Charles Wuorinen, and others. The final section provides suggestions for amateur composers of electronic music, covering methods of tape composition with two recorders, editing, and possibilities for electronic modifications in "live" performance or improvisation. THE AUTHOR: Elliott Schwartz, Associate Professor of Music at Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, has been a visiting lecturer at Trinity College of Music, London, and The College of Creative Studies, University of California (Santa Barbara). He is the author of The5ymphon/es of Ralph Vaughan Williams and a coeditor of Contemporary Composers on Contemporary Music. Recordings of his music have been issued by Ars Nova, Deutsche Grammophon, and Advance. 306 pages.
