In einer Mischung aus Abhandlung und exemplarischem Bildungsgang in Romanform beschreibt der Autor Jean-Jacques zur Veranschaulichung seiner Theorie die Erziehung Émiles von seiner Geburt an bis zu seiner Heirat mit Sophie. Die erste deutsche Ausgabe Aemil oder Von der Erziehung erschien in einer anonymen Übersetzung im selben Jahr in Berlin. Rousseaus gesellschaftskritische Schriften waren von Anfang an heftiger Kritik ausgesetzt. Wie sein Contrat social wurde sein im Mai erschienener Émile Anfang Juni 1762 beschlagnahmt. Die Sorbonne verurteilte das Buch Anfang Juni, das Parlement von Paris verbot es wenige Tage danach und erließ einen Haftbefehl gegen Rousseau. Stein des Anstoßes war vor allem die im Émile im 4. Buch als Einschub enthaltene Profession de foi du vicaire savoyard ("Glaubensbekenntnis des savoyischen Vikars"). In diesem Text trägt Rousseau eine Philosophie von Erkenntnis und Moral vor, in der das eigene Herz bzw. Gewissen die Entscheidungen trifft. Im folgenden Entwurf einer "natürlichen Religion" übt der Autor scharfe Kritik an jeglicher Religion, die sich auf eine Offenbarung gründet. Dies stieß auf Widerstand bei französischen und Genfer Autoritäten, darunter der Erzbischof von Paris Christophe de Beaumont und Vertreter des Calvinismus. In Genf und Paris wurden Exemplare des Émile, in Genf auch der Gesellschaftsvertrag, verbrannt. Rousseaus Thesen leiteten eine Revolution in der Pädagogik ein und beeinflussten alle berühmten Erzieher des 19. Jhs. wie Pestalozzi, Herbart und Fröbel.
