Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. 1st Edition. 1959 USA HARDCOVER. The copyright page has "FIRST EDITION" printed on it, but this is a Book Of The Month Club printing. Rosove's excellent bibliography indicates this is the first US edition, not noting there being any other 1959 USA editions; however, evidence unknown to Rosove indicates that there was a first edition with publisher's price on the jacket and no dimple on the rear cover corner. This book has a dimple in the lower inside corner of the rear cover which indicates it is a Book Of The Month publication. However, I once had a McGraw-Hill first USA edition 1959 that did not have a dimple on the rear cover corner (it has the publisher's book identification number there) and had a dust jacket with a different rear panel and had the publisher's price printed on the flap corner. The Book Of The Month Club version does not have a price printed on the flap corner of the dust jacket. CONDITION: Original navy covers and spine with teal colored outside areas of front and rear cover, silver lettering spine. The book has clean covers, light rubbing at the tips of the corners (= loss of color), no foxing, no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, solid binding. The original dust jacket has small loss at tips of corners, 3cm tear top front flap crease, 2cm tear rear top flap crease, 1cm tear top front, 2.5cm horizontal tear near middle of spine (hard to see), complete front flap with "Book Of The Month Selection" intact in the upper corner (often clipped). INCLUDES the publisher's original flyer (4 pages text on a single sheet folded once as issued) describing and advertising the book. The book measures 218mm tall x 140mm, and has 282 pages, EP map, 17 b/w photos. PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK BEING OFFERED.

Covers faded where dust jacket has pieces missing, contents clean. Ernest Shackleton's third Antarctic expedition sailed from London. His ship was the Endurance, but little did her complement know that their own Endurance would be tested to the full after the ship was trapped in the ice in the Weddell Sea late in 1915 and had to be abandoned. This was the beginning of a struggle for survival, with 28 men with three small boats striking out by sledge and boat across the hazardous Weddel Sea for Elephant Island. Their journey took from Christmas 1915 to April 1916. From the island Shackleton, with a crew of five others, left on April 24 to sail one of the small boats to South Georgia, which they reached on May 10. This has become one of the epic small boat voyages of all time, but it was to be the end of August before the remaining survivors could be rescued from Elephant Island. A remarkable story of beating all the odds. First edition of the work in this format and binding, and/or set or series. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilogram.
