2nd ed. Paperback trade, very good condition, bottom corner creased front cover, spine little cover edges little faded, light foxing title page, pages faintly toned, edges lightly foxed, minor edgewear. 142 pp. From the introductory notes: Parish registers in England and Wales were introduced in the year 1538 by Thomas Cromwell, Chief Minister of Henry VIII. A book and a coffer with two locks should be provided in each parish, and that every Sunday, in the presence of the churchwardens, the parson was to write in this book the records of all the baptisms, marriage and burials of the preceding week. The following is a list of all known transcripts currently held in Australian reference libraries. Unless otherwise stated the parish registers listed are those for the Church of England. This listing does not include the parishes of Scotland, Ireland or Wales. It is believed to be a complete compilation of the holdings of the main repositories in this country.

"In its most basic sense, a parish register is a record of the baptisms, marriages, and burials performed in a local congregation or parish of the Church of England. These records have been kept relatively consistently and universally across England since the mid-sixteenth century, and due to this long and stable tradition, these records are central to English genealogical research. Often, they are one of the only sources for finding families and individuals before the start of civil registration in 1837." (FamilySearch).
