paperback. Zustand: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.…

Red Cloth. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. gilt titles spine; illustrated by b/w. line drawings; a volume in the 'Essex Library' series; "few counties in England can claim more eccentrics than Essex. In the past its impenetrable forests, lonely marshlands and isolated villages were ideally suited to the flourishing of singularity and bred all sorts of odd characters. The people of Essex, always noted for their love of individualism, were proud of these characters and regarded even the most ridiculous with good-humoured tolerance. They appreciated the originality of their views and admired the spirited way in which they pursued their fantasies and flouted the conventions. Before the advent of pop-stars and television, of course, eccentrics were also highly prized as entertainers. Their outlandish clothes, hilarious exploits and racy quips added zest to dull rural existences and supplied wonderful material for gossip."; small stain on front cover, ink ref. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Curious' is perhaps not the first word you would use to label Essex. But 'curiouser and curiouser' it becomes when you dig below the surface. Forget the popular image of Essex boy and girl. Come and meet larger-than-life characters, including the one-time fattest man in England, whose waist was wider than the height of an average man. And talking of big, discover the origin of children's favourite Humpty Dumpty. Did you know that explorer David Livingstone, who trekked across Africa, got lost in Essex; that Essex villain Dick Turpin was only identified because a relative refused to pay the cost of a 'stamp', or that St George saw off his dragon here Shocking, creepy and bizarre tales abound if you dig a little deeper. And if you literally look below the surface in Essex - 100ft underground to be precise - you'll discover one of the most incredible Government 'secrets' of all time.…
