Hardback or Cased Book. Zustand: New. The Faces of Human Rights. Book.
Anbieter: Kloof Booksellers & Scientia Verlag, Amsterdam, Niederlande
Zustand: as new. Bologna : Damiani, 2013. Hardcover. Dustjacket. 216 pp. - New York-based photographer Mariana Cook is known for her character studies of persons both in and out of the public eye. Among her previous bestselling photobooks are Mathematicians, Faces of Science, Mothers and Sons and Fathers and Daughters. Her latest collection introduces us to some of the women and men who are the faces of the human rights revolution, among them former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the 39th American President Jimmy Carter, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the Burmese democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi. Cook traveled the world to photograph and interview her subjects, and the accompanying texts--some written by the subjects themselves, others edited from interviews with them--share their insights into the nature and importance of human rights, and their reasons for devoting themselves to that cause. Through them we are reminded of the power of a single individual--one face, one voice--to transform the world. These human rights pioneers seek no personal gain: any rewards are the benefits that we all enjoy when the rule of democratic law protects us. The pictures and the words in this book show the strength of human character that has made human rights such a powerful movement across the world in our lifetime. Condition : as new copy. Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Leonard C. Garrett Sr. was born May 17, 1930 to parents sharecropping a 40 acres slave plot given his mother's parents when they were freed from slavery. Forced from the farm by the Ku Klux Klan, his parents fled to Tampa, Florida. An avid reader, He learned that outside the southern states, for those with Hope, America offered Opportunity, and through Shared Sacrifice, a better America for the Generation that follows. He quit high school and joined the air force, moved his parents out of the projects, and set out to achieve his American dream. Retiring from the air force he joined a major bank as a junior executive and at age fifty-four, had achieved an American dream never believed possible. The Election of 1980 had Unleashed the Wealthy, Greedy, Corrupt, and the politically Powerful from the 'Bonds of Shared Sacrifice' and; empowered conservative ideology driven southern states to roll-back Supreme Court decisions and Laws guaranteeing civil rights of black and Latino Americans. He was harvested, convicted, and sentenced to prison for crimes 'fabricated' by the US attorney, covered up by a 'Fraudulent Judgment' on appeal, 'denied access' to the Court to seek redress, and was held falsely imprisoned for 10 years all; 'covered-up' by a corrupt conservative criminal justice system. Today at age 81, Garrett is among the millions of Americans driving past 'gated communities' into cities with closed factories, boarded-up homes, and neighborhoods of unemployed, elderly, and less-advantaged Americans suffering the question, 'what happened to the American that 'We'' sacrificed so much to make great ''.

Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. As human rights discourse increasingly focuses on analysing states and the institutions that promote and support the human rights machinery that states have created, this volume serves to recall that despite the growing size of the machinery and unwieldy nature of states, human rights began with real people. It samples a broad range of actors and localities where everyday people fought to ensure that the basic principles of human rights became a reality for all. This volume will give a face to the everyday people to whom credit is due for shaping human rights. It also responds to the perennial question of how to begin a career in human rights by highlighting that there is no single path into this dynamic field, a field built on the back of small initiatives by people across a broad spectrum of career paths.
