Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. 20 cm, 32 pages. The dust jacket has some wear and soiling. Sidney Hook (December 20, 1902 July 12, 1989) was an American philosopher of pragmatism known for his contributions to the philosophy of history, the philosophy of…education, political theory, and ethics. After embracing communism in his youth, Hook was later known for his criticisms of totalitarianism, both fascism and MarxismLeninism. A social democrat, Hook sometimes cooperated with conservatives, particularly in opposing MarxismLeninism. After World War II, he argued that members of such groups as the Communist Party USA and Leninists like democratic centralists could ethically be barred from holding the offices of public trust because they called for the violent overthrow of democratic governments. In 1923, he earned a BA at the City College of New York and in 1927 Ph.D. at Columbia University, where he studied under pragmatist philosopher John Dewey. The National Endowment for the Humanities selected Hook for the 1984 Jefferson Lecture, the U.S. government's highest honor for achievement in the humanities. Hook's lecture was entitled "Education in Defense of a Free Society." In Praise of Reason Award from the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP). awarded by CSICOP Chairman Paul Kurtz in 1984. Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Ronald Reagan (May 23, 1985). "Why is it illogical as well as improbable that U.S. planes would proceed to bomb Moscow because of the accidental failure of a single part of a computer? If U.S. planes did get past the fail-safe point, why would the government not behave in the stupid way depicted by Eugene Burdick and Harvey Wheeler in their novel 'Fail-Safe'? What would be the likely Soviet reaction to a fail-safe accident if Moscow were bombed? Are the safeguards too few or are there so many they could prove crippling in an emergency? Professor Hook answers these questions authoritatively and sets out to prove that 'Fail-Safe', one of the most widely publicized books of our time, is at best, a piece of unscientific science-fiction that causes grave anxiety and deflects attention from the real dangers we face today".
