The book is in really good condition, normal wear and marks apply consistent with use and age. A few mar…ks on the spine cover, a couple of marks on side edge of papers. 413 pages, all intact, good strong, tight binding, all pages, maps, text and illustrations are in good, clean, readable order. Pages 39-44 inclusive have had their top corners clipped, which is such a shame, I will photograph, so please do look at photos, thx. First published by The Folio Society in 1985, this specific edition is a reprint 1989. Photoset in 11 point Baskerville, spaced one point, by Latimer Trend & Company Ltd, Plymouth. Printed by The Bath Press, Avon, on Elan Cream Wove Paper, and bound by The Bath Press in Ernstmeir Bucheinband Cloth, blocked with a decorative motif. Another wonderful book from The Folio Society.

Far from the Madding Crowd (1874) is Thomas Hardy's fourth novel and his first major literary success. It originally appeared anonymously as a monthly serial in Cornhill Magazine, where it gained a wide readership. The novel is the first to be set in Hardy's fictional county of Wessex in rural south west England. It deals in themes of love, honour and betrayal, against a backdrop of the seemingly idyllic, but often harsh, realities of a farming community in Victorian England. It describes the farmer Bathsheba Everdene, her life and relationships, especially with her lonely neighbour William Boldwood, the faithful shepherd Gabriel Oak, and the thriftless soldier Sergeant Troy. Additionally, Under the Greenwood Tree has light bumps to its cover corners, and The Trumpet-Major & The Mayor of Casterbridge have a touch of soiling to the top edge of their text block. Overall, this is a solid, bright and tight, Very Good+ set in Very Good slipcases, which all have rubbing to their panels, as well as some shelf wear along their edges, while the large slipcase has scuffing to the edges of its top panel, bumps to the corners, and a split starting at the lower rear seam.
