Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Pauline Diana Baynes (illustrator). First Edition. Ninth impression of the true first edition, published in 1972 (the book was originally published in 1949). ***Produced in the same format as the first edition, and illustrated with two full page colour plates by Pauline Baynes, including a colour plate frontispiece, and profusely illustrated with black and white line drawings throughout. ***Near fine in corn-yellow cloth-covered boards with dark blue titles to the spine and front board, with a dark blue line illustration of a dragon to the front board. The boards are clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine very slightly creased. Corners sharp. Page block edges clean. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. The two colour plates are bright and clean. Decorative 'dragon' repeat motif dark blue line decorated endpapers. No foxing to the interior pages. No creases or tears. ***In a very good cream and brown line illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £1.25 net. The dustwrapper is virtually complete, with just very slight loss at the head of the spine. There is also a small stain which affects the top of the spine and front panel near the spine, but the dustwrapper is otherwise bright. No fading to the spine. No chips, creases or tears. ***204mm x136mm. 79 pages plus one-page note at the back of the book regarding "Chrysophylax", Tolkien's dragon, and details about "The Hobbit" and another Tolkien dragon: the great worm "Smaug". ***'Here is a new tale by the author of "The Hobbit", a fairy story which was acclaimed by discerning critics as possessing an imaginative vitality as rare as genius. Farmer Giles, rather than a fairy story of any usual kind, is an imaginative history of the distant and marvellous past. Its scene is the valley of the Thames and this island of Britain, while it was "still happily divided into many kingdoms," in the days before King Arthur or the Seven Kingdoms. ***Here is a new hero, unheroic, but fortunate and shrewd, Farmer Giles of Ham, and his mare, and his dog. Here also for dragon-fanciers, is another dragon, less terrible perhaps than Smaug, but no less wealthy or wily: Chrysophylax of imperial line. ***The story was not written for children in particular, but many of them will enjoy it all the more for that, as some already have. Its imaginative atmosphere and magic are best captured when it is read aloud--- ***The delightful embellishments by Pauline Diana Baynes include two plates in colour.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***Ninnth impression of the true first edition, complete with the correct ninth impression dustwrapper, in very nice collectable condition. Of interest to collectors of the work of J. R.R. Tolkien, and the illustrations of Pauline Baynes, who also illustrated "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe", and the other Narnia books by C. S. Lewis. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
