In den Warenkorb1st ed. thus stiff wrappers As New octavo xiv + 325pp., b/w plates, bibliog., index, FM Sir Henry Wilson, an Irishman who in June 1922 was assassinated on his doorstep in London by Irish republicans, was one of the most controversial British soldiers of the modern age. Before 1914 he did much to secure the Anglo-French alliance and was responsible for the planning which saw the BEF successfully despatched to France after the outbreak of war with Germany. A passionate Irish unionist, he gained a reputation as an intensely 'political' soldier, especially during the 'Curragh crisis' of 1914 when some officers resigned their commissions rather than coerce Ulster unionists into a Home Rule Ireland.

In den Warenkorb438 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 037030683X Two b&w maps. "Among the papers of Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson in the Imperial War Museum are some 300 letters dating from his time as professional head of the British Army. Wilson was Chief of the Imperial General Staff, February 1918 to February 1922, and the correspondence selected for this Army Records Society volume reflects all the principal military concerns of the period. During the last nine months of the First World War the great German spring offensive, the Allied successes in the late summer and autumn, and final victory in November dominate the letters. Post-war problems of demobilisation and army re-building were followed by the difficulties of meeting wide-range military commitments throughout the world. At home domestic revolution necessitated that the army prepare for operations in aid of the civil power. Abroad military action had to be co-ordinated with the French in order to enforce the peace treaty with Germany and support Allied policy in Eastern Europe. Further demands were made on the army by calls to repress nationalist unrest in Ireland, Egypt, Indian and Mesopotamia (Iraq), together with communal violence in Palestine. All these topics are covered in the correspondence, which in particular demonstrates Wilson's growing disillusionment with the government's Irish policy. Wilson was himself an Irishman with strong Unionist sympathies which materially contributed to his assassination by Irish nationalists just a few months after retiring from the War Office." Previous owner's small stamp on front pastedown, two very tiny corner bumps, tiny bump at bottom of rear hinge, minor wrinkling at top of spine, small bump at bottom edge of rear board, tiny dint at top edge of rear board. Dust jacket has very light edgewear/wrinkling, very small closed tear at bottom of rear flap with soft crease. Very Good/Very Good.
