Donovan, the veteran political anatyst who rebuilt ? and now heads ? The Los Angeles Times Washington Bureau, examines the momentous consequences of the November election on The Future of the Republican Party. Does the Republican defeat of 1964 pose a threat to the two-party system in the years immediately ahead ? Who speaks now for the GOP ? What role will Barry Goldwater and his conservative following play in the future of the party? What are the chances of the Republican party electing a President in 1968? These are but a few of the questions Robert J. Donovan seeks to answer in this incisive study of a party in crisis, a study begun on assignment for The Los Angeles Times soon after the San Francisco convention. To gather material for the series of post-election articles that inspired this book, Mr. Donovan traveled across the country talking to politicians and scholars alike. He interviewed former Republican national chairmen, American-history and political-science professors, incumbent state chairmen and national committeemen, local campaign officials, and newly elected officeholders, both high and low. His far-reaching investigation into the cause of the Republican party's current troubles led Mr. Donovan to explore its past history. In this book he shows how the 1912 split brought about an underlying liberal-conservative conflict that has weakened the party to this day. He traces the damaging legacies of Presidents Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover. But he points out that it was in the middle years of this century that the party started down the road to disaster. Dewey's defeat, Eisenhower's failure to build party machinery, Nixon's debates with Kennedy?all were but prelude to the fatal blunder : the nomination of right-wing candidate Barry Goldwater, a candidate with "built-in handicaps," each of which Mr. Donovan dissects in detail. With the returns of the recent election as his guide, the author assesses the party's strengths, on local and state as well as the federal level. He considers the Republican issues that pulled votes and the men who show possibilities for leadership: Romney, Percy, Ford, Laird, Scranton, Lindsay. He debates the likelihood of a realignment within the party, as well as the specific problems that face conservatives and moderates and the future of such men as Goldwater, Rockefeller, Javits, and Nixon.
