In a paper read before the Royal Society in 1824, Whewell, according to Herbert Deas, "Laid the foundations of mathematical crystallography." His system for calculating the angles of planes of crystals assumed that crystals are aggregates of small rhomboids that can be thought to shrink below the level of possible measurement, thus suggesting that crystals are latticelike. (DSB Vol. 4 p. 293).
