Plum cloth boards, gilt titles spine. 22.3 x 14.8cm. 219 pages. b/w photos. George Slingsby was born in 1889 in a grace and favour cottage on the Babworth estate, on the edge of the Dukeries. His father was gardener to Colonel Dennison, the Squire of Babworth Hall. Society was then firmly locked into the Victorian ethic of hard work and sobriety. Yet, by the time George entered service, a change was already in the air. A fun loving King had ascended the throne and a more relaxed interlude was to be enjoyed by all classes before the storm clouds appeared. George was ambitious. He went on to be footman at Welbeck Abbey, then personal valet to the wealthy Canadian Sir Frederick Orr Lewis, with whom he travelled widely. Told with engaging frankness and humour by his daughter Nina Slignsby Smith. Condition: Ex Library. Library nos. bottom of spine cover. Boards rubbed slightly top and bottom of spine. o/p 2 library stamps in red and green. Red has slightly bled onto paste down. Slight scuff on page. Publication page library stamp, library nos + handwritten nos in blue biro. P219 bottom of page library stamp. No further library stamps/marks.
