Some light browning to edges of text and occasional light foxing to text. 103pp. Scarce. William Barnes was born in Bagber, near Sturminster Newton in Dorset in 1801. As well as poetry, Barnes also produced works about the phonology, grammar and vocabulary of the Dorset dialect: "A Grammar and Glossary of the Dorset Dialect", published in 1863 of which this is a copy, and a much expanded version, "A Glossary of the Dorset Dialect with Grammar of its Word-shapening and Wording", in 1886. Barnes hated what he called 'foreign' words and avoided the use of them in his poetry, preferring instead to use the Saxon language. Where there was no Saxon equivalent, Barnes would often invent words and phrases, such as 'push wainling' for perambulator. Barnes had studied Celtic literature and often used a repetition of consonantal sounds known as cynghanedd. This is particularly noticeable in the poem, "My Orcha'd in Linden Lea".

8vo., 103 pp. Contemporary glazed linen with leather spine label, expertly rebacked. The glazing has largely lifted with uneven fading. The front flyleaf is partially cracked and signed by a later owner; the text has an occasional spot of foxing. A good copy. This bears the bookplate of Frederick Evans, as well as a few instances of his marginalia in pencil.
