Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Throughout Mexicos history to the present day, through the assassination of Colosio and beyond, the struggle to seize and hold onto power at any cost has led to unexpected alliances, unprecedented levels of corruption and brazen killings. Some of these have been downright Machiavellian, including the rumored poisoning of Benito Juarez. The chain of betrayals extends through the nineteenth century, from Morelos to Santa Anna and Porfirio Diaz, who stamped out Mexican liberalism and, despite winning the presidency by championing the principle of no reelection, clung to power until the outbreak of revolution. The twentieth century continued the trend, with Victoriano Huertas betrayal of Madero; Carranzas betrayal of Zapata; and Obregons betrayal of the revolution and its main rallying cry: effective suffrage, no reelection. The latters treason culminated in his reelection in 1928 and subsequent betrayal of Carranza, Villa, Adolfo de la Huerta and Francisco Serrano, until he met his end at the hands of, among others, Plutarco Elias Calles, his close friend and fellow Sonoran. Francisco Martin Moreno relies on meticulous archival research to analyze these and other episodes in Mexican history in this accessible and compelling volume, motivated by the conviction that understanding the history of ones country, warts and all, is fundamental to building a healthy society today.
